ISAF Offshore Safety Course
| Cost: | £170 |
|---|---|
| Course Duration: | 2 days (1 day if you already hold a valid Sea Survival Certificate) |
| Prior Experience: | none |
The Offshore Safety Course includes the one-day RYA Sea Survival Course.
If you already have the RYA Sea Survival certificate then the second day of the ISAF course can be booked separately at a cost of £80. It is the second day of the dates specified on the calendar.
The course provides training for skippers and crews who may encounter rough weather and problems at sea. The first day of the course covers the Sea Survival syllabus and all the practical aspects of it. Day two of the Offshore Safety Course covers heavy weather sailing techniques, including the use of storm sails, sea anchors and drogues.
Other modules include weather forecasting, fire fighting, Man over Board techniques (and the recovery of the person), search patterns, effective communications, clothing, rendering assistance to other vessels and hypothermia.
ISAF and Racing Requirements
The certificate awarded confirms crew eligibility under section 6.01 of the ISAF Special Regulations for category 0, 1 and 2 offshore races. These require a percentage of the crew to have taken personal survival training.
It is an absolute must for those crews undertaking the Rolex Fastnet Race to consider doing the Offshore Safety course. Rule 6.01.3 of the ISAF Special Regs states ‘It is strongly recommended that all crew members should undertake training as in OSR 6.01 at least once every five years.’
The full ISAF Offshore Regulations can be viewed on the ISAF Website.
