Cowes Week 2012 opened with an exciting weekend of racing. Visit Malta Puma who are competing for the full week had a fantastic 2 races and are currently 3rd overall. A brilliant result against some tough competition, including long time rival Premier Flair.
Race 1 on Saturday was sunny, but windier than many expected and wind against tide made for some choppy conditions. Tim Thubron and Mike Martin on Visit Malta Puma raced hard to secure their 3rd place in IRC3. Our crews on Jaguar Logic and Lion Logic were engaged in their own private battle with Peter Burwood on Jaguar Logic taking the glory by just 2 seconds.
Race 2 on Sunday saw more stable SW winds and slightly less challenging conditions and after a great start Lion Logic skippered by Rob Gibson took victory over Jaguar Logic in another 3 1/2 hour battle. At the end of the two races Lion were placed 14th out of 29 boats in class. A great result considering some of the crew were new to racing.
Meanwhile in the 40.7 class, our weekend racers on Parallel Blue with skipper Leanna Hill had a training day in light winds and then were straight out to race in 20-25 knots - quite an introduction! A birthday on board gave plenty of opportunity for celebrations ashore at the end of the race so no doubt there were a few fuzzy heads on Sunday morning. A 180 degree windshift 2 minutes before the start confused matters further and the imminent spinnaker hoist was postponed as the first leg suddenly became a beat! The team were full of smiles when they returned to shore after racing and delighted with their mid-fleet position.
Elsewhere the fesity conditions saw many boats suffering from sail and rig damage and a few collisions ended the racing prematurely for some crews. So a fantastic weekend for Sailing Logic with all boats competing and only sustaining minor wear and tear. Great work from all the crew and skippers!
