Racing Sail Trim 2012
This fantastic weekend training course is designed to
specifically focus on racing sail trim for maximising boat
speed.
One day will focus on spinnaker handling.
Starting with how to rig the boat for a spinnaker, the course will
include shorter upwind and downwind legs to practice racing
kite hoists and drops, with longer legs to work on
spinnaker trim to optimise downwind performance and
gybing. This includes pole height, how far back the pole
should be, main sail settings, use of tweakers and trimming. We'll
cover man overboard recovery under kite as well as discuss
broaching, how to prevent it and recovery.
The other day will focus more on upwind
performance. This will include sail trim for boat speed
following a tack or for pointing higher. You'll learn how to
set and trim the genoa and the mainsail, in addition to the sheets
the course will also look at the role of halyard tension,
backstay, cunningham and kicker/vang.
Throughout the weekend, everyone will rotate positions
to maximise learning opportunities. The course will start
at 9.30am on Saturday from Shamrock Quay marina in Southampton and
will finish at about 16.30pm on the Sunday.
The course will be taught by Rob Gibson, a hugely
expereinced racing and cruising sailor who has also
written various publications on sail trim
for the RYA, and you may have seen him at the London Boat Show
doing a talk on sail trim too!
If you'd like to know more about positions and crew work our Race Development
