RYA Coastal Skipper
| Cost: | £549 Course / £660 Yachtmaster Coastal |
| Course Duration: | 5-days / 7 days with exam |
| Prior Experience: | Specific pre-requisites required |
The RYA Coastal Skipper Course teaches more advanced
sailing techniques designed to prepare you to skipper more
challenging and longer passages.
The 5 day Coastal Skipper course concentrates on navigation,
practical meteorology, night pilotage, man overboard recovery, boat
handling, watch keeping and preparation for sea. The 7-day option
allows you to take an exam at the end, to receive the RYA/MCA
Yachtmaster Coastal Certificate of Competence.
Students will take it in turn to skipper the yacht and practice
the new skills that have been learnt. By the end of the RYA Coastal
Skipper Course you should have the confidence to skipper a yacht on
longer coastal cruises.
Before you take the course, please check that
you have the required logged
mileage, which is different for the 5-day and 7-day options.
You will also need a valid VHF Licence and First Aid
certificate for the Yachtmaster Coastal. If you need to
gain more experience or log more tidal miles, consider joining one
of our delivery trips or
milebuilders.
You should also hold the RYA Coastal/Yachtmaster Theory
Certificate, if you completed it a while ago but feel a little
rusty - consider our weekend Theory Refresher.
An RYA Coastal Skipper Course Completion Certificate will be
awarded on successful completion of the 5-day course. Or you
can opt to take an additional exam to acheive the RYA/MCA
Yachtmaster Coastal Certificate (additional exam fee payable
directly to examiner).

Format:
Join the yacht in Port Hamble Marina on Sunday
7pm, ready to set sail on Monday morning. Stay on board and return
about 4pm on Friday. The exam runs over the weekend.
Which course should I
take? It partly depends on what level you are at
with your sailing, check your logged mileage against the
pre-requisites. Undertaking the additional exam option is a
great way to prepare you for the RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Offshore exam, if
you are planning on progressing further with your sailing.
