What will I be able to do once I have my RYA Competent Crew qualification?

RYA Competent Crew on board Lancelot II

It’s easy to find out what courses you need to do to be competent in sailing, but the main question our new course recruits ask us, is, “what will I be able to do once I have my RYA Competent Crew qualification?”

The simple answer is, of course, crew competently! This means that you are no longer the complete novice that stepped on at the start of the course but you now understand the basics of sail trim, how to steer the yacht, some useful knots and how to handle the lines, sheets and halyards.

We’ll also teach you how to use the domestic systems such as being safe in the galley, using marine loos and yacht electronics. You wouldn’t be expected to anticipate or know exactly what to do in any given situation on board (yet) but at least the instructions being given by the skipper would make sense.

So now we have answered your question ‘what will I able to do once I have my RYA Competent Crew qualification’, the next step would be to take your RYA Day Skipper course, starting with your RYA Day Skipper Theory course. All of our RYA courses are based on the latest RYA syllabus.
